GASTVORTRAG: VARIETIES OF RISK

Abstract: The notion of risk plays a central role in economics, finance, health, psychology, law and elsewhere, and is prevalent in managing challenges and resources in day-to-day life. In recent work, Duncan Pritchard (2015, 2016) has argued against the orthodox probabilistic conception of risk on which the risk of a hypothetical scenario is determined by how probable it is, and in favour of a modal conception on which the risk of a hypothetical scenario is determined by how modally close it is. We introduce three different conceptions of risk: the standard probabilistic conception, Pritchard’s modal conception, and a normalcy conception. Ultimately, we argue that the modal conception is ill-suited to the roles that a notion of risk is required to play and explore the prospects for a form of pluralism about risk, embracing both the probabilistic and the normalcy conceptions.

ANTRITTSVORLESUNG: EPISTEMISCHE ZIELE UND IDEALE DER KUNST

Ort: Aula der Alten Universität
Abstract: Ist die rezeptive Auseinandersetzung mit Kunst unseren epistemischen Zielen zuträglich, und wenn ja, inwiefern? Diese Frage konkretisiert eine Perspektive auf den alten Topos Kunst und Erkenntnis. Um ihr nachzugehen, müssen wir sowohl unser Verständnis von Kunst als auch die Natur unserer epistemischen Ziele genauer bestimmen. In diesem Vortrag werde ich mich auf zwei Ideale von Kunst konzentrieren: das der autonomen und das der post-autonomen Kunst. Ebenso werde ich zwei zentrale epistemische Ziele untersuchen: propositionales Wissen und objektuales Verstehen. Ich werde darlegen, ob und inwiefern Werke, die diesen Kunstidealen entsprechen, der Erreichung dieser Ziele zuträglich sein können. Außerdem werde ich aufzeigen, wie der Übergang von der autonomen zur post-autonomen Kunst sowohl epistemischen Nutzen als auch epistemische Kosten mit sich bringt.
Im Anschluss wird zu einem Umtrunk in der Bel Etage geladen.

"GUILTY PLEASURE?"
ON KITSCH, KITSCH PEOPLE, AND THE ENJOYMENT OF KITSCH

Kitsch enjoys widespread popularity. Many people apparently love kitsch and derive pleasure from it. However, kitsch has also been the subject of extensive critique from aesthetic, ethical, epistemic, social, and cultural perspectives. These critiques often extend to the enjoyment of kitsch itself, which is sometimes regarded as problematic. Consequently, the pleasure of kitsch is frequently considered a quintessential example of a "guilty pleasure." This talk examines whether and in what specific ways kitsch pleasure may be problematic. The aim is to argue that whether one should criticize kitsch pleasure depends crucially on the conditions under which recipients consume kitsch. By distinguishing between various aesthetic sensibilities toward kitsch, the talk will show consciously reflective engagement with kitsch leads to an innocent kitsch pleasure.

"FLUCHT NACH VORN. ENTWURF EINER PHÄNOMENOLOGISCH-EXISTENZIALEN THEORIE DES NARZISSMUS"

Narzissmus erscheint in manchen Diskursen geradezu als ein Zeichen unserer Zeit; sicherlich ist er ein Modethema. Aber was ist Narzissmus, wo kommt er her und was geht er uns an? Antworten darauf stammen aus ganz unterschiedlichen Feldern (Psychoanalyse, Psychologie, Psychiatrie, Soziologie, Philosophie) und unterschiedlichen Zeiten. Wir bieten eine ergänzende und integrierende phänomenologisch-existenziale Theorie dazu an, was bedeutet, wir versuchen, das Selbst- und Weltverhältnis von Narzissten in ihren (transzendentalen) Grundstrukturen zu beschreiben, und zwar mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit auf deren leibliche Verfasstheit, aber auch mit Blick auf Zeitlichkeit und Intersubjektivität. Wir verstehen Narzissmus dabei als die (tragische) Konfiguration von einem tiefen Mangel an Selbstwert, kombiniert mit Strategien, die auf Surrogate dieses Selbstwerts zielen. Der Vortrag wird einen Überblick über den Ansatz geben, ausgehend von einer leibphänomenologischen Interpretation des Ovid-Mythos, Kritik an Konzepten des gesunden und primären Narzissmus, sowie Überlegungen zu den Konzepten des Selbst-Werts und der Spiegelung.

"EXPLAINING EPISTEMIC NORMATIVITY"
In this paper, I address the following four questions. What makes a norm an epistemic norm? What are the right epistemic norms? Why are we bound by these norms? How does epistemic normativity relate to other kinds of normativity? Most epistemologists addressing issues of epistemic normativity have looked at ethics for guidance. Notions like epistemic value and epistemic virtues have been introduced to help with this task. The idea that constitutive aims of beliefs or of believers play a role participates in this attempt to use practical notions when explaining epistemic normativity. In this paper, I want to explore a different line of thought: we are the source of epistemic normativity independent of what we aim at or what we value.

Maimon is well-known for posing lasting challenges to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and for developing an influential combination of Humean empirical skepticism and Leibnizian rationalist dogmatism in the Essay on Transcendental Philosophy of 1790.
